| February 14, Boston Teachers on possible eve of illegal strike
The Boston Teachers Union has an illegal vote scheduled for later this afternoon (4pm). And before I hear from people asking how I could call this illegal -- it is not my interpretation, but that of a Suffolk Superior Court Judge. From the Boston Globe: When a parent asked how the union could think about striking when children's futures are at stake, Richard Stutman, union president, responded, "Children would gain more in the next three years than they would lose in this one day." A very simple question: How do students gain when teachers break the law in an attempt to gain a 22% raise over four years (vs. 10% over four years current offer from Administration)? What example is set for students when teachers openly break the law? Everyone except for the Boston Teachers Union acknowledges that a strike is an illegal act. Read the notices at the Boston Public School Systems here. The Superintendent clearly states the facts and the law in the letters - "Failure to report to work as scheduled on February 15th will result in loss of pay and potential disciplinary actions up to and including termination." A simple math exercise: Question 1: 10% divided by four years equals? .......... Answer = 2.5% Question 2: 22% divided by four years equals? .......... Answer = 5.5% Question 3: What is the maximum amount of local taxation increase in a community? .......... Answer = 2.5% |
