October 17, Miami Hurricanes a disgrace to NCAA & society

As a member of a local school committee (Bridgewater-Raynham Regional), the activity over this weekend greatly disturbs me.  As adults, we have a responsibility to the young – to set appropriate examples, and to rules of conduct.
It will be interesting to see if the NCAA has any backbone and takes appropriate action after the University of Miami and Florida International brawl this past weekend.  Not only were the actions of the players reprehensible, but the lack of a quick and strong response by the NCAA displays a total disregard for the student in student-athlete.
The NCAA on its website refers to student-athletes: “The NCAA is committed to developing leadership abilities in student-athletes.”  What kind of leadership when there is overwhelming video evidence of inappropriate and possibly illegal acts (assaults) by the football players from those two schools?
To Myles Brand, NCAA President, I urge you to take decisive action in regards to these two schools.  Anything short of terminating the football programs at these two schools is unacceptable.   Not terminating the football programs immediately once again demonstrates that the NCAA is not concerned with student-athletes, only in the sales of weekend football games and the winter bowl games.
Action, or inaction, by the NCAA will send a message to these student-athletes, and future students.
