June 28, Bridgewater Fire Department to try for SAFER Grant again

Bridgewater Fire Chief George Rogers requested permission to submit a grant proposal through the SAFER program, at last night’s Board of Selectmen Meeting.  Last year, a proposal was submitted that would have helped to fund eleven fire personnel.  While reviewed favorably, last year’s proposal ultimately did not make the final cut.
This year’s proposal would fund four fire personnel positions (again including benefit costs).  Over a five-year period, the total personnel costs would be $949,740 with the grant funding $414,000 and the Town responsible for the balance $535,740.  Of particular note, this grant pays more in early years and less at the end.  Therefore, about $347,000 of the Town requirement would be in the final two years of the five-year plan.
The Bridgewater Board of Selectmen unanimously endorsed the grant application.  Chief Rogers and his staff should be applauded for their efforts to augment needed personnel by seeking out and completing application for matching fund programs.
