February 16, Should colleges and universities contribute financially to host communities?

With all of the recent problems in Bridgewater for many different reasons with the students of Bridewater State College, there is renewed interest in exploring a student fee to be paid to host communities.  In Boston, there is talk of a $200 per student fee to mitigate the costs to the city of Boston.  So, would a fee paid by Bridgewater State College students to the town of Bridgewater be appropriate?
Some say that the College already contributes to the quality of life in town.  However, that is a difficult value to measure.  And this is especially so when one considers the cost to public safety departments such as fire and police, and the time spent by the town's Inspectional Servies to keep a handle on the various "Animal Houses" that some college students occupy near the college.  (That reference to "Animal House" is based on Enterprise story of 2/15/06 using the same name for the houses.)
An initiaitve like this is not intended to simply take more money from students, but rather serve as an offset to the tremendous costs that burden the host town of Bridgewater.
