September 28, School Committee Review of Student Supply Lists

{Because of a scheduling conflict, I will be unable to attend tonight's School Committee Meeting.  I forwarded this on to the Committee to have my statement read during the discussion of Supply Lists.}

   As the School Committee Member who brought forward the concern about the growing “requested student supply lists”, I appreciate the work by Superintendent McIntyre in assembling the list.  I am surprised by items that I know to be requested – copier paper, dry erase markers, cleaning solution, tennis balls – not on the assembled list.  However, I hope that this means that upon further reflection, these items are being permanently removed from the “requested student supply lists”.
   I understand the items on the list without asterisks as items that many students and parents expect to provide.  Such items as binder paper, binders, composition books, folders, notebooks, pencils and pens are materials students would use.  Further, the intent of the supply lists is to alert parents of the expectations – for instance as children become older, students would migrate from a simple binder to composition books.
   I hereby endorse a policy that items on the list and without asterisks (“personal” items) dated 9/28/05 be accepted by the Bridgewater-Raynham School Committee as acceptable for annual notification to parents.  Any items not so specified should come before the School Committee for approval.
   The School Committee should provide for educational supplies, and therefore must be aware of any supplies that teachers or administrators believe necessary and not part of the school budget.
