August 30, Email making the rounds seeking a boycott of gas purchase on September 1st

There is an email making the rounds, calling for a boycott of gasoline purchases on Thursday, September 1st.  While this is an interesting idea, and one that might make a small statement, there are some other points to consider:
(a) If all you do is not purchase on Thursday, then there will be no net effect on the oil/gas company.  Instead of paying $25 on Thursday, you spend the money on Friday for your fillup.  You only changed the date of receipt.
(b) This can actually have a dramatic effect on your local gas station, rather than the major oil company.
(c) Conservation, use of alternate fuels, change of habits are the only approaches that will effect overall petroleum usage - and thus effect an oil companies bottom line.
Even with gasoline costs rising daily - I have seen 20 cent per gallon increases in one change - I do not think that people will really change until the winter home heating bills arrive.  The prices have already crossed the $2 and now $3 thresholds.  The next mgic number will be at $10 - and hopefully that number is still a way off.
