June 30, Staffing effect from the accepted $47.4M B-R Budget

(The June 30, 2005, edition of the Taunton Gazette described the approved budget as meaning teacher layoffs.)

As one of the Bridgewater-Raynham School Committee members who worked with Gordon Luciano, Susan O’Brien and Donald DeLutis on the upcoming school year budget and staffing plan (as part of the Budget Sub-Committee), I believe it important to note what was meant by the statement of “22 positions lost”.  As part of the original $49.9M budget, a plan was in place to make permanent 90 positions – some that were recently funded by gifts/grants and many based on the increased town assessments.
The accepted B-R budget of $47.4M made 68 positions permanent as part of our Operating Budget.  Therefore, the loss of 22 was from the initial plan for staffing.  The accepted budget does not mean teacher layoffs.  The often-referred to “loss” during the budget presentation was designed to detail for the public the difference between the original plan and the one ultimately accepted.  An increase of staff will occur as a result of this approved budget.
