| March 29, When is a zero-three-three percent raise actually more than 6% total?
ANSWER: When the published raises are part of the Bridgewater-Raynham teacher contract. The following are five examples of salary for teachers at various grades & step levels. 2004-05 (0%) 2005-06 (3%) 2006-07 (3%) Overall salary (actual %) salary (actual %) salary (actual %) % raise Bachelors degree, step 1 in 2003-04 = $35,411 $37,333 (5.43%) >> $40,300 (7.95%) >> $44,422 (10.23%) 25.45% Masters degree, step 5 in 2003-04 = $48,824 $50,655 (3.75%) >> $54,473 (7.54%) >> $58,050 (6.57%) 18.90% Masters degree + 30, step 8 in 2003-04 = $59,873 $61,900 (3.39%) >> $65,861 (6.40%) >> $69,780 (5.95%) 16.55% Doctorate/2 Masters, step 10 in 2003-04 = $67,487 $69,341 (2.75%) >> $73,528 (6.04%) >> $77,828 (5.85%) 15.32% Doctorate/2 Masters, step 13 (20 years) in 2003-04 = $73,360 $73,360 (0.00%) >> $76,561 (4.36%) >> $78,828 (2.96%) 7.45% Keep these dollars and raises in mind with the upcoming discussions about funding education. Be especially cautious of those claiming to say funds are needed for education. Hint, this is a code for saying more money for teacher salaries and NOT more money to improve education. Ask yourself if education is improved by huge increases in salary (I have spoken about health insurance and the generous package previously) or if the money would be better spent to impact the students? Rather than double-digit wage increases, I believe education would be better with the money going for: more teachers, educational assistants, text books, teaching materials and supplies. What is truly improved with these salary increases? |
