March 24, State Dept of Ed releases report of Average Teacher Salaries

Based on the End-Of-Year Pupil and Financial Reports submitted by each school system to the MA Dept. of Education, the annual report for teacher salaries is released.  33 of 328 systems were not included in the report, but should be added in soon.
Boston tops the list at $69,022 and the state average is now $53,689 for year-ended June 30, 2004.  Bridgewater-Raynham is #19 on the list, with 357.5 teachers averaging $60,277 per year.  West Bridgewater is right at the average at $53,466 and East Bridgewater is slightly above average at $55,072

What this means is that Bridgewater-Raynham teachers are once again near the top in pay scales, this time scoring at 12.27% above state average.  It is amusing that while many on the B-R School Committee and in the Administration often speak of the fact that our 'per-pupil' spending is below state average and our goal should be to spend more to get to the state average, there is a deafening silence when the discussion moves to controlling costs and the fact that these salaries are above average.  So, based on current published reports from the Dept of Ed., B-R is 21.95% below state average on per pupil spending, but 12.27% above average for teacher salaries.
Much will be said in the coming weeks about everything that could be done with the additional funds, but think about this - if the amount spent by B-R for teachers was spent at the average rate for the state, we would have 43.9 more teachers in our school system right now.
