| February 6, Strange happenings in Raynham and Town Elected Offices
Over the past fourteen months, there has been a lot of change in the elected leadership positions in Raynham - Selectmen and B-R School Committee. After serving the Bridgewater-Raynham School Committee for many years, Mark Sanderson resigned mid-term, creating the opening that Louis Pacheco was elected to in 2004 (for a two-year term). Selectmen Gordon Luciano resigned mid-term, creating the opening for John Donahue to be elected to the remaindor of the term - one year. This was also in 2004. Gordon left the Selectmen position to run for a seat on the Board of Assessors, which he was elected to. School Committee member Patti Roland, after serving many terms, resigned her position mid-term. This created the need for an appointment - filled by Melanie DeSantis. Over the past couple of days, I have read about Gordon Luciano taking out nomination papers to run for an open 3-year seat on the Bridgewater-Raynham School Committee being vacated by Linda Dillon. (Linda announced on February 2, 2005, that she will not be seeking re-election after serving on the Committee for many years.) Two things are interesting about the previous - (a) the number of people who have stepped down from elected office prior to completing their term; and (b) Gordon Luciano elected in 2002, resigning in 2004, elected to a different office in 2004, and now announcing his intention to seek yet a different office. The public needs (and deserves) people who truly want to serve in the various offices to be committed to their elected positions. Further, I am mindful of the commitment required to serve in these elected roles, and understand how family and other commitments may cause a person to re-think their ability to adequately represent their constituents. However, to me, it is noteworthy this anamoly - in short order, 3-4 individuals changing their minds. |
