You can do something!
At the last B-R School Committee Meeting, Susan O'Brien made a request to begin seeing monthly financial reports from the B-R School District, including budget and actuals. This is the same information I have been asking about for longer than I have been on the School Committee. I have also brought up the issue that it is the School Committee's responsibility under Mass General Law to review this information and approve it. Further, it is my contention that only the School Committee has the authority to re-allocate money during the school year. This is not a position that the Superintendent believes to be true, and we have disagreed on this topic often.
Recently, while discussing School Committee issues with a member of a different School Committee, he explained to me that I was correct in requesting this information. Further, he provided to me a Policy Paper from the Southborough School Committee on this topic. This document will be posted here shortly (Nov 17 story) - including its references to other school districts, Mass General Laws and court decisions.
