October 28, Idea of a couple of Tax-Free Days OK, the initial idea seems appealing. Who wouldn't like to be able to buy the new tv or dishwasher and save to $20-$50 in sales tax that would accompany a $400-$1000 purchase? What I fear will happen is that retail stores will be empty the week (or weeks) leading up to the Tax-Free Day, and then complete chaos on the sale day. I also question whether all of those deferred sales will ultimately be made on that special day. Say you put off buying the new $700 tv to save the $35 in tax, and then fight the crowds to the store on the appointed day. After finally tracking down a harried salesperson, you find that your desired tv is completely sold out. Now, you are left to consider buying a different tv, waiting until the next Tax-Free Day, or plan on a future visit to buy the tv including sales tax. However, don't forget the biggest "OR" of all -- deciding against the purchase because you are so disppointed at the missed opportunity to save a few dollars. I am pleased that options are being explored by our Legislature, however this is just a bad idea. |
