October 21, Lively Discussion on What's Up Last Night

Nick Palmieri hosted Tim Fitzgibbons (Chair) and Mark Oliari, both of the B-R Regional School Committee last night.  The first topic was the process, which is just beginning, on a search for a new Superintendent.  (Supt. Gerhart previously submitted his papers of resignation previously, effective the end of this school year.)  There was also lively discussion on budgets and settled union grievances.  Both guests agreed that a useful tool in the future for Bridgewater when reviewing our town budgets would be to see detailed prior year budgets for the schools and detailed information on actuals spent.  The discussion even went so far as to say that it could force the issue on wasteful spending if the town sees money expended in an area that is not a high priority to the town.  The town could therefore short the school budget by that amount in an effort to force the School Comm. to review spending in that area.

However, calls came in from viewers, and the discussion became more interesting as the topic of Pomroy Management was brought up.  [Rick Pomroy even called in, referring to Nick and I as "Mutt and Jeff".  I am not sure which one of us is Mutt, and who is Jeff though.]  One of the most surprising revelations was a statement by Mr. Pomroy saying that he had cleared this course of action with the School System's Attorney.  Mark Oliari was flabbergasted by this - that someone bidding on services could get use of a Scholl District's resource.  A couple of other callers seem to heap praise on Mr Pomroy for all his efforts in the rehab of the Elementary School and the Police Station.  However, if Mr. Pomroy resigned about July 5 from the Building Committe, how much credit does he deserve for the project?  Yes, he continued to volunteer assist the Committee.  He even led a walk-thru on August 26th.  Then, that opens the question of "How removed from the project was he while submitting a bid?" And, stay tuned for more on the Police Station as it may not have been completed on budget, as is often stated.
