October 8, Will we ever user the Fire SubStation? The Selectmen spoke of the situation last night. Dennis and Mike have been working with Chief Walsh to determine what could be done to solve this problem. The new station was built to provide public safety to residents on 'the other side' of the tracks. The fire at Tommi Ann a week ago illustrates the reason for the fire station - fire crews had to drive by the closed SubStation on their way to the fire. It is an 8 1/2 minute drive from the station to that house. (BTV-9 Cable has announced that number also.) Luckily, no one was inside at the time of the fire, but what if someone had been? 8 1/2 minutes response time is just far too long. It may take some hard decisions by the Selectmen, but public safety should be their first concern. If that means reducing budgets for recreation or other departments, then so be it. Or better yet, why not sell the Golf Course and generate some revenue? We voted to build a SubStation because a clear need was defined. It is time we found the money to properly staff it. And, to provide public safety to residents on that side of the tracks. |
